Introduction
This document describes the installation and use of the SCNT1 Family Reference Design Board (SCNT1-RDB).
The SCNT1-RDB is a printed-circuit board that provides an example implementation of an ISDN NT1 circuit based
on the Lucent Technologies T7256 or T7234. In addition, it can be configured as an ISDN terminal adapter (TA)
based on the Lucent Technologies T7237. With the T7234 or T7256 installed, it is a fully functional NT1, with the
exception of power status monitoring circuitry (which can be added by the user). It can be used as an evaluation
platform as well as a reference design. With the T7237 installed, it can be used to develop U-interface terminal
adapter applications (external control hardware is required in this case). When the T7237 is installed, the S/T-inter-
face circuitry of the SCNT1-RDB is not used. For instructions on board operation, go directly to the Board Setup
and Operation section. A block diagram of the SCNT1-RDB is shown below in Figure 1.

Description
Overview
Figures 2 and 3 show the board component placement
for the top and bottom sides of the board, respectively.
The major sections of the board are identified in
Figure 2. Figures 4—6 are the board schematics.
Figure 4 contains the following circuits: U-interface,
MLT circuit, status LED, POR circuit, access to power
status leads, and fixed/adaptive timing control for the
S/T-interface. Figure 5 contains the S/T-interface cir-
cuitry. Figure 6 contains the prototyping EPLD, the
FADS adapter interface, the general-purpose interface,
and the external power connection.
Table 1 shows the bill of materials for the board. With
the T7256 or T7234 installed, the board can be oper-
ated as a stand-alone NT1 by simply connecting the U-
and S/T-interfaces to the appropriate point in the ISDN
network and applying +5 V power at connector J5. The
board can also be operated in enhanced (NT1+) and
terminal adapter (TA) modes when using the T7256.
In NT1+ mode, the board connects to the U- and S/T-
interfaces plus local terminal adapter data or POTS
ports. TA mode is similar to NT1+ mode, except that
the S/T-interface is not used. Both of these modes
require external controllers and TA circuitry that con-
nect via the general-purpose interface (J3) or the FADS
adapter interface (J4). With the T7237 installed, the
board is always operated in the TA mode.
