Board Setup and Operation
With a T7234 or T7256 installed, the board can be
operated as a stand-alone NT1 by simply connecting
the U- and S/T-interfaces to the appropriate point in the
ISDN network and applying +5 V power at connector
J5. The board can also be operated in enhanced
(NT1+) and terminal adapter (TA) modes. In NT1+
mode, the board connects to the U- and S/T-interfaces
as in stand-alone mode. In addition, it connects to local
terminal adapter or POTS ports via the TDM highway
and the serial microprocessor port. TA mode is similar
to NT1+ mode except that the S/T-interface is not used.
This mode is the only one supported by the T7237. The
NT1+ and TA modes require external controllers and
circuitry that connect via the general-purpose interface
(J3) or the FADS adapter interface (J4).
Stand-Alone Mode
To operate the board in stand-alone mode, connect the
U- and S/T-interfaces to the appropriate point in the
ISDN network. Power is applied at connector J5. A
euro block connector (Augat2ESDV-02) that mates to
the J5 power supply connector is supplied with the
board and has terminals to facilitate easy connection to
a power supply. The +5 V lead of the power supply
should be connected to J5 pin 2 (closest to the bottom
edge of the board), and the return lead of the power
supply should be connected to J5 pin 1 (farthest from
the bottom edge of the board). The red LED (D11, just
above the power connector) should light when power is
applied. If it does not, check fuse F2 for an open. If it is
open, replace it. If it is not open, there is another prob-
lem with the board and it should be returned to the fac-
tory. The green STLED LED (D1, near the upper right
corner of the EPLD socket, which is driven by the
STLED pin of the T7234/56) provides a visual indica-
tion of activation status.
If the SCNT1-RDB is plugged into a live ISDN line, an
activation will be requested by the switch (typically
every 15 seconds), and/or the TE will request an
activation. In addition, when power is initially applied to
the board, the T7234/56 will request an activation
because the SCK pin is internally pulled low and if this
pin is pulled low when the RESET state is exited, the
T7256 attempts one start-up.
A start-up request will cause the STLED to flash fast
(8 Hz). Once the U-interface synchronizes, the STLED
will flash slow (1 Hz). The 1 Hz and 8 Hz rates are easy
to distinguish. After U-interface synchronization, the
S/T-interface attempts to synchronize. When both the
U- and S/T-interfaces have achieved full activation, the
STLED will stop flashing and remain on.
NT1+ and TA Modes
The operation of the board in NT1+ and TA modes is
similar to that of stand-alone mode. The power and
ISDN interfaces can be connected in the same way,
except that the S/T-interface is not used in TA mode.
Both the NT1+ and TA modes require external control-
ler circuitry that connects to the board via the general-
purpose interface (J3) or the FADS adapter interface
(J4). In each case, an alternate powering arrangement
is possible. Instead of supplying +5 V/GND via the J5
power connector, the external controller circuitry can
provide the +5 V/GND through J3 pins 2/3 (for the
general-purpose interface) or J4 pins 2&29/1&30,
respectively.
A software package called “SCNT1-RDB/FADS Dem-
onstration Software” is available for use with the
SCNT1-RDB. This package demonstrates a data-only
TA configuration using the SCNT1-RDB with the Motor-
ola68302 FADS serving as the controller and data
source. The Lucent Technologies FADS Adapter Card
is required to connect the SCNT1-RDB to the 68302
FADS board. The software runs on a PC under Win-
dows* and demonstrates basic layer 1 connectivity by
providing the following functions:
1. Read/modify the T72357/56 registers via the
MC68302 SCP port.
2. Configuration of the MC68302 SCCs in PCM mode
to demonstrate the MC68302-to-SCNT1 TDM inter-
face configuration.
3. U-interface loopback mode for testing data integrity
between the MC68302 SCCs and the SCNT1 TDM
interface.
4. Provides all of the above in an easy-to-use,
Windows-based environment with flexibility for writ-
ing script files to produce user-defined command
sequences.
The software includes complete on-line help documen-
tation.
