ItisrecommendedthattheBOOSTcapacitorbenolarger
than10%oftheINTVCCcapacitorCVCC,toensurethat
theCVCCcansupplytheupperMOSFETgatechargeand
BOOSTcapacitorunderalloperatingconditions.Variable
frequencyinresponsetoloadstepsofferssuperiortran-
sientperformancebutrequireshigherinstantaneousgate
drive.Gatechargedemandsaregreatestinhighfrequency
lowdutyfactorapplicationsunderhighdI/dtloadsteps
andatstart-up.
SettingOutputVoltage
TheLTC3878outputvoltageissetbyanexternalfeed-
backresistivedividercarefullyplacedacrosstheoutput,
as shown in Figure 5. The regulated output voltage is

To improve the transient response, a feed-forward ca-
pacitor,CFF,maybeused.Greatcareshouldbetakento
routetheVFBlineawayfromnoisesources,suchasthe
inductorortheSWline.
DiscontinuousModeOperationandFCBPin
TheFCB(forcedcontinuousbar)pindetermineswhether
theLTC3878operatesinforcedcontinuousmodeoral-
lowsdiscontinuousconductionmode.Tyingthispinabove
0.8Venablesdiscontinuousoperation,wherethebottom
MOSFET turns off when the inductor current reverses
polarity.Theloadcurrentatwhichcurrentreversesand
discontinuousoperationbeginsdependsontheamplitude
oftheinductorripplecurrentandwillvarywithchangesin
VIN.Insteady-stateoperation,discontinuousconduction
modeoccursforDCloadcurrentslessthan1/2thepeak-
to-peakripplecurrent.TyingtheFCBpinbelowthe0.8V
thresholdforcescontinuousswitching,whereinductor
currentisallowedtoreverseatlightloadsandmaintain
synchronousswitching.
Inadditiontoprovidingalogicinputtoforcecontinuous
operation,theFCBpinprovidesameanstomaintaina
flybackwindingoutputwhentheprimaryisoperating
indiscontinuousmode.ThesecondaryoutputVOUT2is
normallysetasshowninFigure6bytheturnsratioN
ofthetransformer.However,ifthecontrollergoesinto
discontinuousmodeandhaltsswitchingduetoalight
primaryloadcurrent,thenVOUT2willdroop.Anexternal
resistordividerfromVOUT2totheFCBpinsetsaminimum
voltageVOUT2(MIN)belowwhichcontinuousoperationis
forceduntilVOUT2hasrisenaboveitsminimum.
