The SYMFC909 and the LSI Logic software drivers provide superior performance
and lower host CPU overhead than other competitive solutions. Because of
its high level of integration and SAN architected design, the SYMFC909
provides the highest level of performance in a more overall cost-effective Fibre
Channel solution.

Figure 2. SYMFC909 block diagram
Figure 2 shows the functional block diagram for the SYMFC909. The architecture
maximizes performance and flexibility by deploying fixed gates in critical perfor-
mance areas and utilizing a custom RISC processor in the host interface and for
exception handling.
Initiator Operations
The SYMFC909 autonomously handles FCP exchanges upon request from the
host. The SYMFC909 generates appropriated sequences and frames necessary to
complete the request and provides feedback to the host on the status of
the request.
Target Operations
The SYMFC909 provides for general purpose target functions such as required for
front-end RAID applications.
Utility Software
The SYMFC909 provides the capabilities to perform a simplified Bit Error Rate
(BER) test on the link for diagnostic purposes. In a special diagnostic test mode
the controller can transmit and verify a pre-programmed data pattern for link
evaluation. This test provides a low cost system administrative utility.
