4.3 REGISTER DESCRIPTION
Two registers, mapped inside group F, Page 21 of
the Register File, allow the user to configure exter-
nal memory accesses as needed.
EXTERNAL MEMORY REGISTER 1 (EMR1)

Reset value: x000 0001 (x1h)
Bit 7 = Reserved.
Bit 6 = MC:
Mode control.
0: DSN and RWN pins keep the ST9OLD mean-
ing.
1: DSN becomes OEN, Output ENable: it keeps
the ST9OLD meaning during external read op-
erations, but is forced to “1” during external write
operations.
RWN pin becomes WEN, Write ENable: it fol-
lows the ST9OLD DSN meaning during external
write operations, but is forced to “1” during ex-
ternal read operations.
Bit 5 = DS2EN:
Data Strobe 2 enable.
This bit must be cleared, as the DS2 pin is not
available on this device.
Bit 4 = Reserved.
Bit 3 = NMB:
Non-Multiplexed bus.
0: Data bus provides the address LSB multiplexed
with data.
1: Data bus provides only data and is released in
high impedance when addresses should come
(recommended).
Bit 2 = ETO:
External toggle.
It is recommended to always clear this bit.
0: The external memory interface pins (ASN, DSN,
RWN, DAT[7:0]) toggle only if an access to ex-
ternal memory is performed. Also true if memo-
ry protection is enabled.
1: The external memory interface pins (except
DSN which never toggles during internal memo-
ry accesses) toggle during both internal and ex-
ternal memory accesses if memory protection is
disabled.
Bit 1 = BSZ:
Bus size.
0: Memory bus not forced to high impedance.
1: All the memory interface pins DSN, RWN,
DAT[7:0], ADDR[15:0] and MMU[5:0] are forced
to high impedance.
Bit 0 = Reserved. Forced to 1 by hardware.
WARNING: External memory must be correctly
addressed before and after a write operation on
the EMR1 register. For example, if code is fetched
from external memory using the ST9OLD external
memory interface configuration (MC=0), a setting
to 1 of MC bit will produce an unpredictable behav-
iour of the device.
