In conversationmode, onrequestof controlproces-
sor, whatevercondition is set (normal or boostbat-
tery, direct or reverse polarity), you can inject the
12kHz(or16kHz)signal(permanentlyappliedatthe
pin33 with 950mVrmstyp.amplitude),as metering
pulses.Apatentedautomaticcontrolsystemadjust
the level of the metering signal, across the line, to
2Vrms setting BIT3 = 0, or to 5Vrmssetting BIT3 =
1 ;this,regardlessof theline impedance.Moreover
the meteringsignal is ramped at the beginningand
at theendof eachpulsetopreventundesirableclic-
kingnoise; the slope is determinedbythe value of
CINT (see the external component list of L3030).
The SLIC also provides, in the transmit direction
(fromline to4-wireside),anamplifier toinsertanex-
ternalnotchfilter (series resonator) forsuppressing
the 12/16kHzresidual signal.
Fig.4showsasuggestednotchFilterconfiguration.
The metering pulsescan be injected with a DC line
current equalto zero (ON-HOOK Operation).
If teletaxis not usedthe notch filter can bereplaced
bya 1K
resistor.
InconversationmodetheACimpedanceatthelineter-
minals,ZML,issynthetizedbytheexternalcomponents
ZACandRP,accordingtothe followingformula:
ZML = ZAC + (RP1 + RP2)
Dependingon the characteristicoftheZAC network,
ZMLcanbeeitherapureresistanceoracomplexim-
pedance,soallowingSTSLICtomeetdifferentstand-
ards as far as the return loss is concerned. The
capacitorCCOMPguaranteesstabilitytothesystem.
The two-to-fourwire conversionis achieved byme-
ansof aWheatstonebridgeconfiguration,thesides
of which being :
1) theline impedance(Zline),
2) the SLIC impedanceat line terminals(ZML),
3) thenetworkZAconnectedbetweenpin36and41
of L3030(see externalcomponentlist ofL3030),
4) thenetwork ZB between pin 36 and groundthat
shallcopythe line impedance.
For aperfectbalancing, thefollowingequationshall
be verified:

It is important to underline that ZA and ZB are not
obliged to be equal to ZML and to Zline, but they
bothmay be multiplied by a factor(up to ten)so al-
lowinguse of smaller capacitors.
Inconversation,theL3000Ndissipatesabout250mW
foritsownoperation;thedissipationdependingonthe
currentsuppliedto theline shall be added.
