the sensing resistor switches the comparator,thus
settingthe flip flop. This disablesthe phasesignals
and deactivatesthe bridge. Current in the winding
fallsuntilthenextclockpulseresetstheflipflop,and
the sequence repeats to maintain a constant cur-
rent.
CONTROLLER IC REDUCES
COMPONENT COUNT
Ifyou’re using ahardwaretranslationand constant-
current choppers,you can furtherreducethe com-
ponentcount byusing a controllerchip such as the
L297 – a 20-pin DIPthat housesa translator and a
dualfixed-frequencychoppercircuit. Underthecon-
trolof stepanddirectioninputs,theL297generates
normal,wave-drive and half-step sequences.
Asshowninfig. 5, thecontrollerconnectsdirectlyto
adualbridge.Externalcomponentrequirementsare
minimal : and RC network to set the chopper fre-
quencyanda resistive divider to establishthe com-
paratorreferencevoltage (V

).
Toaccommodatemotorswithaphasecurrentasgreat
as3.5A,replacethesingledual-bridgeICwithtwode-
vices configured in parallel (input to input, enable to
enable,etc)to form a single bridge. It’s extremelyim-
portantthatyoupair thehalf bridges– 1 with 4and2
with3 –to ensureoptimum currentsharing.
