In addition to simplifying design problems, a familyof dedicatedchipsimproves stepper-motordrive-circuit
reliability by significantly reducing the componentcount.

The L293, L293E and L298N dual-bridgeICs (see
box
, ”insidethe dual-bridgeICs”) significantlyredu-
ce the problemsencounteredinthe design of step-
per-motor drive circuitry. They can, for example,
simplify the design and increase the efficiency of
constant-current choppers. And with a single chip
replacing the transistors and predriver stages, cir-
cuitperformanceimproves. Bestof all, the devices
haveapplicationsincomplex as well asbasicdriver
networks.
