ReceiverSections
ThereceiversectionoftheAFBR-5903ZutilizesanInGaAs
PINphotodiodecoupledtoacustomsilicontransimped-
ancepreamplifierIC.Itispackagedintheopticalsub-
assemblyportionofthereceiver.
ThisPIN/preamplifiercombinationiscoupledtoacustom
quantizerICwhichprovidesthefinalpulseshapingfor
thelogicoutputandtheSignalDetectfunction.TheData
outputisdifferential.TheSignalDetectoutputissingle-
ended. Both Data and Signal Detect outputs are PECL
compatible,ECLreferenced(shifted)toa+3.3Vpower
supply.Thereceiveroutputs,DataOutandDataOutBar,
aresquelchedatSignalDetectDeassert.Thatis,whenthe
lightinputpowerdecreasestoatypical-38dBmorless,
theSignalDetectDeasserts,i.e.theSignalDetectoutput
goestoaPECLlowstate.Thisforcesthereceiveroutputs,
DataOutandDataOutBartogotosteadyPECLlevels
HighandLowrespectively.
Package
TheoverallpackageconceptfortheAvagoTechnologies
transceiver consists of the following basic elements; two
optical subassemblies, an electrical subassembly and the
housingasillustratedinFigure1.
ThepackageoutlinedrawingandpinoutareshowninFigures
2and3.Thedetailsofthispackageoutlineandpinoutare
compliantwiththemultisourcedefinitionofthe2x5DIP.
ThelowprofileoftheAvagoTechnologiestransceiverdesign
complieswiththemaximumheightallowedfortheMT-RJ
connectorovertheentirelengthofthepackage.
Theopticalsubassembliesutilizeahigh-volumeassembly
processtogetherwithlow-costlenselementswhichresult
inacost-effectivebuildingblock.
Theelectricalsubassemblyconsistsofahighvolumemul-
tilayer printed circuit board on which the IC and various
surface-mountedpassivecircuitelementsareattached.
Thereceiversectionincludesaninternalshieldfortheelec-
tricalandopticalsubassembliestoensurehighimmunityto
externalEMIfields.
Theouterhousingiselectricallyconductiveandisatreceiver
signalgroundpotential.TheMT-RJportismoldedoffilled
nonconductive plastic to provide mechanical strength
and electrical isolation. The solder posts of the Avago
Technologiesdesignareisolatedfromtheinternalcircuit
ofthetransceiver.
Thetransceiverisattachedtoaprintedcircuitboardwith
thetensignalpinsandthetwosolderpostswhichexit
thebottomofthehousing.Thetwosolderpostsprovide
theprimarymechanicalstrengthtowithstandtheloads
imposed on the transceiver by mating with the MT-RJ
connectoredfibercables.
