Circuit Description:
1. FM frontend
The FM receiver section includes a 2-pin varactor tuned oscillator. The
oscillator frequency is fed into the double balanced mixer.
The mixer input stage of the IC allows balanced and unbalanced prestage
configuration.
The FM input frequencies are converted to a fixed IF in the 10.7 MHz range.
The FM IF is post amplified in a separate IF amplifier with DC adjustable or bus
controlled gain.
The TUA 4401 has been designed to work with the PLL on board in the 100
MHz range.
Depending on the RF input signal strength the integrated AGC prestage control
drives PIN diodes as well as MOSFETs.
2. IF demodulator
The FM IF amplifier includes a 7 stage capacitive coupled limiter amplifier with
coincidence demodulator and MPX output. The MPX output signal may be
continuously attenuated to decrease the noise for weak input signals (dynamic
soft mute).
There is a signal strength generator with high linearity and increased dynamic
range.
An IF center output and an IF counter detect output supply informations about
correct or incorrect tuning. The IF center output switches to active low if the
tuning is in the center of the IF frequency, e.g. 10.7MHz. The IF counter detect
gives an information about too low or too high IF frequency related to the center
frequency.
