spindle-motor predriver (continued)
The preset, start/SENSE, and start/TACH modes are used to start the spindle motor. The commutation state
machine controls motor commutation by enabling the appropriate TPIC150x high- and low-side drivers.
During startup, the commutation state machine is advanced by pulses applied on ADVANCE. As the spindle
motor approaches idle frequency, the run mode is selected. At this time, the commutation state machine is
advanced by the output of the VCO. The back EMF detector and the phase-error amplifier generate an error
signal that is applied to the input of the VCO. The use of this error signal adjusts the commutation frequency
to the spindle motor.
In the run mode, the current applied to the motor is controlled in one of two ways:
–
For PWM control, the input at ICNTRL is held above 3.5 V, ensuring that the output of gate U1 is applied
to the low-side driver of the spindle motor. The PWMIN signal to gate U1 modulates the voltage applied
to the spindle motor. If the maximum current that is adjustable by the selection of RSENSE is exceeded,
the one-shot timing forces the output of U1 low to turn off the low-side driver.
–
In the current-control mode, a voltage proportional to the desired current and less than 3.5 V is applied to
ICNTRL. In this mode, the output of the transconductance amplifier (OTA) is tied to the low-side driver.
Feedback from the RSENSE resistor adjusts the voltage applied to the low-side driver until the desired
current is reached.

Stresses beyond those listed under “absolute maximum ratings” may cause permanent damage to the device. These are stress ratings only, and
functional operation of the device at these or any other conditions beyond those indicated under “recommended operating conditions” is not
implied. Exposure to absolute-maximum-rated conditions for extended periods may affect device reliability.
