PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION
idle mode
Idle mode is selected by taking CS high. The internal write-current generator and write-unsafe detector are
deactivated. The read outputs can be wire ORed and a single write-current programming resistor can be used
to select write current for a multiple-device application. This device is designed for low-power dissipation in the
idle mode.
fault detection
A voltage fault-detection circuit disables the write-current generator during power start-up or voltage fault in any
mode. WUS goes high, indicating a fault, when any of the following conditions exist:
Write current is zero
Device is read mode
Frequency on WDX/WDY is low
Device not selected
Head short to ground
Head open
Low V
CC
One positive transition on WDX/WDY is required to clear WUS after the all fault condition except WDX/WDY
frequency. WDX/WDY frequency fault is cleared after detecting a safe frequency; therefore, at least one
complete period is required to clear this fault. Once the safe frequency is detected, one positive transition of
WDX/WDY clears this fault.
