R&D&P System
The leading-edge Opto-Electronics Devices of NEC Compound Semiconductor Devices are brought to life through our R&D&P
(Research, Development and Production) system.
A branch of Photonic & Microwave Device Research Laboratory (one of NEC's corporate laboratories) has been built at our
wafer fab site, NEC Kansai, to research and develop fundamental technologies. NEC Compound Semiconductor Devices
engineers are also developing Opto-Electronics Devices technology for products and production processes at the same site. The
products are manufactured at the company's exclusive production line at the NEC Kansai Plant, using sophisticated crystal
growing technologies inherent to compound semiconductors to produce crystals with compositions corresponding to various
wavelengths, from short ones to very long ones. The manufactured dies are shipped to Kyushu Denshi Co., Ltd., which has a
strong relationship with NEC Compound Semiconductor Devices, where they are assembled and finally shipped to the market.
Such a framework enables us to collaborate very closely in R, D and P groups as one RDP Team and to minimize the time to
market in research activities. Quickest technology transfer from R to D to P associated with on-time feedback from P to D to R
brings about brand new products provided by well-matured mass production technology.

Sophisticated Production Automation System
Not only does NEC Compound Semiconductor Devices develop leading-edge devices, it also strives to introduce highly sophisti-
cated automation to the production system. This automation supplies a large volume of products on a stable basis, and keeps
production costs down. The world famous Phoenix line, which is a fully automated assembly line for photocouplers, is a produc-
tion line that has become a model for other companies. The Phoenix line contributes to high quality assurance and provides a
constant supply of products. This automated production system is also used in the production of the OCMOS FET (Solid State
Relay). It is currently undergoing upgrading to a flexible production system. This system operates under a new concept that is
capable of flexibly adjusting to fluctuations in the mix of demands from the market. These sophisticated automated production
technologies are also playing a role in the construction of production systems for visible light laser diodes, laser diodes for
communications and other high end devices. Through this high level production automation system, the Opto-Electronics
Devices of NEC Compound Semiconductor Devices enjoy shortened production lead times, stabilized supply, reduced produc-
tion costs and are assured of stable high quality without being influenced by human factors.

Globalization of Production and Marketing
The Opto-Electronics Devices from NEC Compound Semiconductor Devices are also involved in the strengthening of our overseas
production activities. At Microwave & Optical Semiconductors Taiwan (MOST), photocouplers are being produced using the Phoenix
line. In this way, the overseas production of consumer devices is fully supported by the supply system. Sophisticated production
automation systems are also being used for production overseas. Through the globalization of sales and marketing, NEC Compound
Semiconductor Devices local corporations have been developed all around the world. In North America, California Eastern Laboratories
(CEL), in Europe, NEC Electron Devices European Operations are in charge of all Opto-Electronics Devices. These overseas organiza-
tions play a vital role in searching out new market trends and customer needs. Also, in order to assist customers in their design activi-
ties, they send out product information worldwide via the Internet. The NEC Compound Semiconductor Devices website (http://
www.csd-nec.com/) operates 24 hours a day, all year long. It provides information on all NEC Compound Semiconductor Devices opto-
electronic products and makes it possible for customers to download data sheets and other documents in PDF format at any time.
The Opto-Electronics Devices from NEC Compound
Semiconductor Devices are playing a role in preserving
the environment. Communication by light is a clean
method of signal transmission that does not cause
inductive interference as with other electronic devices.
Large capacity optical discs can hold vast amounts of

driven by a minute input current, direct control is possible
using CMOS logic and microprocessors, and overall
circuit power consumption can be reduced. There is no

and maintenance of the environment.
