MSM7732
Audio CODEC
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The MSM7732 is a single-channel full-duplex CODEC CMOS IC which performs signal translation
between an analog voice band signal and pulse code modulation (PCM) digital signal. Two types of PCM
data formats are supported, along with support for both normal and short frame synchronous timings.
The MSM7732 performs several types of tone generation, including dual-tone multiple frequency
(DTMF), transmit data mute, receive data mute, programmable gain control, and side-tone path control
with programmable attenuation. The MSM7732 can output both the 8-bit PCM signal used in wired tele-
phone applications, as well as the 14-bit linear signal, making the MSM7732 ideal for wireless applica-
tions such as cellular telephones.
The MSM7732 integrates both the microphone preamplifier and speaker post-amplifier on-chip. The
post-amplifier is capable of directly driving a 32-
load. A voice-activated (VOX) circuit allows for a pro-
grammable amount of noise to be filtered out between words or sentences. Multiple noise levels can be
selected, eliminating the need for the manufacturer to carry multiple boards with multiple threshold lev-
els of VOX noise in inventory. The MSM7732 can be easily programmed by a microcontroller through a
3-pin serial peripheral interface (SPI). Information such as the type of operation (read/ write), register
address, and data are transferred in a predetermined sequence. Registers can be reprogrammed at any
time.
The MSM7732 operates at a maximum clock frequency of 2.048 MHz with only 18-mW power consump-
tion. A programmable powerdown function allows a microcontroller to place the MSM7732 in a power-
down state via the serial interface. Powerdown mode reduces power consumption to only 0.06 mW,
making the MSM7732 ideal for battery-powered applications.
