Inductor Core Selection
Different core materials and shapes will change the
size/currentandprice/currentrelationshipofaninduc-
tor.Toroidorshieldedpotcoresinferriteorpermalloy
materialsaresmallanddon’tradiatemuchenergy,but
generallycostmorethanpowderedironcoreinductors
withsimilarelectricalcharacteristics.Thechoiceofwhich
styleinductortouseoftendependsmoreonthepricevs
sizerequirementandanyradiatedfield/EMIrequirements
ratherthanwhattheLTC3541-3requirestooperate.Table2

This formula has a maximum at VIN = 2VOUT, where
IRMS=IOUT/2.Thissimple,worst-caseconditioniscom-
monly used for design. Note that the capacitor manu-
facturer’sripplecurrentratingsareoftenbasedon2000
hoursoflife.Thismakesitadvisabletofurtherderatethe
capacitororchooseacapacitorratedatahighertempera-
turethanrequired.Alwaysconsultthemanufacturerwith
anyquestionregardingpropercapacitorchoice.
TheselectionofCOUTforthebuckregulatorisdrivenby
thedesiredbucklooptransientresponse,requiredeffective
seriesresistance(ESR)andburstrippleperformance.
TheLTC3541-3minimizestherequirednumberofexternal
componentsbyprovidinginternalloopcompensationfor
thebuckregulatorloop.Loopstability,transientresponse
andburstrippleperformancecanbetailoredbychoice
ofoutputcapacitance.Formanyapplications,desirable
stability,transientresponseandrippleperformancecan
