Synchronous Rectifier
To control inrush current and to prevent the inductor
currentfromrunningawaywhenVOUTisclosetoVIN,the
P-channelMOSFETsynchronousrectifierisonlyenabled
whenVOUT>(VIN+0.24V).
Anti-Ringing Control
Theanti-ringcircuitconnectsaresistoracrossthein-
ductortopreventhighfrequencyringingontheSWpin
duringdiscontinuouscurrentmodeoperation.Although
theringingoftheresonantcircuitformedbyLandCSW
(capacitanceonSWpin)islowenergy,itcancauseEMI
radiation.
Output Disconnect
TheLTC3526L/LTC3526LBaredesignedtoallowtrueoutput
disconnectbyeliminatingbodydiodeconductionofthe
internalP-channelMOSFETrectifier.ThisallowsforVOUT
togotozerovoltsduringshutdown,drawingnocurrent
fromtheinputsource.Italsoallowsforinrushcurrent
limitingatturn-on,minimizingsurgecurrentsseenbythe
inputsupply.Notethattoobtaintheadvantagesofoutput
disconnect,theremustnotbeanexternalSchottkydiode
connectedbetweenSWandVOUT.Theoutputdisconnect
featurealsoallowsVOUTtobepulledhigh,withoutany
reversecurrentintoabatteryconnectedtoVIN.
Thermal Shutdown
Ifthedietemperatureexceeds160°C,theLTC3526L/LT-
C3526LBwillgointothermalshutdown.Allswitcheswill
beoffandthesoft-startcapacitorwillbedischarged.The
devicewillbeenabledagainwhenthedietemperature
dropsbyabout15°C.
Burst Mode OPERATION
TheLTC3526LwillenterBurstModeoperationatlightload
currentandreturntofixedfrequencyPWMmodewhenthe
loadincreases.RefertotheTypicalPerformanceCharacter-
isticstoseetheoutputloadBurstModethresholdcurrent
vsVIN.TheloadcurrentatwhichBurstModeoperationis
enteredcanbechangedbyadjustingtheinductorvalue.
Raisingtheinductorvaluewilllowertheloadcurrentat
whichBurstModeoperationisentered.
InBurstModeoperation,theLTC3526Lstillswitchesata
fixedfrequencyof1MHz,usingthesameerroramplifier
andloopcompensationforpeakcurrentmodecontrol.
This control method eliminates any output transient
whenswitchingbetweenmodes.InBurstModeopera-
tion,energyisdeliveredtotheoutputuntilitreachesthe
nominalregulationvalue,thentheLTC3526Ltransitions
tosleepmodewheretheoutputsareoffandtheLTC3526L
consumesonly9AofquiescentcurrentfromVOUT.When
theoutputvoltagedroopsslightly,switchingresumes.
Thismaximizesefficiencyatverylightloadsbyminimizing
switchingandquiescentlosses.BurstModeoutputvoltage
ripple,whichistypically1%peak-to-peak,canbereduced
byusingmoreoutputcapacitance(10Forgreater),or
withasmallcapacitor(10pFto50pF)connectedbetween
VOUTandFB.
Astheloadcurrentincreases,theLTC3526Lwillauto-
matically leave Burst Mode operation. Note that larger
output capacitor values may cause this transition to
occuratlighterloads.OncetheLTC3526LhasleftBurst
Modeoperationandreturnedtonormaloperation,itwill
remainthereuntiltheoutputloadisreducedbelowthe
burstthresholdcurrent.
BurstModeoperationisinhibitedduringstart-upandsoft-
startanduntilVOUTisatleast0.24VgreaterthanVIN.
TheLTC3526LBfeaturescontinuousPWMoperationat
1MHz. At very light loads, the LTC3526LB will exhibit
pulse-skipoperation.
