CIRCUIT OPERATION
The L585 alternatorregulator performstwo main functions : regulationcontroland fault diagnostics.
REGULATION
Thealternatorvoltageis comparedwitha reference
voltageinanerroramplifier(seeblockdiagram),the
outputof whichdeterminesthe dutycycleof theex-
ternal darlington. This darlington switches the cur-
rent in the excitationcoil of the alternator.
Theswitchingfrequencyisfixedandissetbytheex-
ternal capacitor C

(see application circuit). Ca-
pacitivepositive feedbackand a monostableelimi-
natesspuriousswitchingcausedbycontactbounce.
Thebasecurrentdeliveredtotheexternaldarlington

must be dimensioned according to the charac-
teristicsof thisdarlingtonandthemaximum coilcur-
rent.
DIAGNOSTIC
Thiscircuitreceivesinformationfromthebattery,the
alternator and one alternator phase. It indicates
anomolousconditionsbydrivinga3Wlamp.Topre-
vent spurious fault warnings some indications are
notdisplayedimmediatelybutaredelayedbyafixed
time. No externalcomponentsareneededtoimple-
ment this delay since it is producedinternallybydi-
viding the internal oscillator with an eight-stagedi-
vider to give a delayof 128 periods.For a onesec-
onddelay the oscillator frequencymust be 128 Hz.
The lamp is driven after a delay when the following
conditionsoccur : no charge, break or short circuit
in the alternatorsensewire.
Thediagnosticlamp isdrivenimmediatelywhenthe
cableconnectingthealternatortothebatteryis bro-
ken(Va-Vbattabove2.6typ.)orwhentheICiswith-
out power supply(V
