Sector Group Protection and
Unprotection
The hardware sector group protection feature disables
both program and erase operations in any sector
group. In this device, a sector group consists of four
adjacent sectors that are protected or unprotected at
the same time (see Tables
5
and
6
). The hardware
sector group unprotection feature re-enables both pro-
gram and erase operations in previously protected
sector groups. Sector group protection/unprotection
can be implemented via two methods.
Sector protection/unprotection requires V
ID
on the RE-
SET# pin only, and can be implemented either in-sys-
tem or via programming equipment. Figure 2 shows
the algorithms and Figure 24 shows the timing dia-
gram. This method uses standard microprocessor bus
cycle timing. For sector group unprotect, all unpro-
tected sector groups must first be protected prior to
the first sector group unprotect write cycle.
The device is shipped with all sector groups unpro-
tected. AMD offers the option of programming and
protecting sector groups at its factory prior to shipping
the device through AMD’s ExpressFlash Service.

Sector Protection
Write Protect (WP#)
The Write Protect function provides a hardware
method of protecting the top two or bottom two sectors
without using V
ID
. WP# is one of two functions pro-
vided by the WP#/ACC input.
If the system asserts V
IL
on the WP#/ACC pin, the de-
vice disables program and erase functions in the first
or last sector independently of whether those sectors
were protected or unprotected using the method de-
scribed in “Sector Group Protection and Unprotection”.
Note that if WP#/ACC is at V
IL
when the device is in
the standby mode, the maximum input load current is
increased. See the table in “DC Characteristics”.
