ASH Trans ceiver Block Di a gram
Fig ure 2 is the gen eral block di a gram of the ASH trans ceiver.

An enna Port
The only ex er nal RF com po nents needed for the trans ceiver are
the an enna and its match ng com po nents. An ennas pre sent ng an
im ped ance in the range of 35 to 72 ohms re sis ive can be sat s ac o
rily matched to the RFIO pin with a se ies match ng coil and a shunt
match ng/ESD pro ec ion coil. Other an enna im ped ances can be
matched us ng two or three com po nents. For some im ped ances,
two in duc ors and a ca pac or will be re quired. A DC path from RFIO
to ground is required for ESD pro ec ion.
Re ceiver Chain
The out put of the SAW fil er drives am pli ier RFA1. This am pli ier in
cludes pro vi sions for de ect ng the on set of sat u a ion (AGC Set),
and for switch ng be ween 35 dB of gain and 5 dB of gain (Gain Se
lect). AGC Set is an in put to the AGC Con rol func ion, and Gain Se
lect is the AGC Con rol func ion out put. ON/OFF con rol to RFA1
(and RFA2) is gen er ated by the Pulse Gen er a or & RF Amp Bias
func ion. The out put of RFA1 drives the SAW de ay line, which has
a nom nal de ay of 0.5 μs.
The sec ond am pli ier, RFA2, pro vides 51 dB of gain be ow sat u a
tion. The out put of RFA2 drives a full-wave de ec or with 19 dB of
thresh old gain. The on set of sat u a ion in each sec ion of RFA2 is
de ected and summed to pro vide a log a ith mic re sponse. This is
added to the out put of the full-wave de ec or to pro duce an over all
de ec or re sponse that is square law for low sig nal lev els, and tran
si ions into a log re sponse for high sig nal lev els. This com bi na ion
pro vides ex cel ent thresh old sen si iv ty and more than 70 dB of
detector dy namic range. In com bi na ion with the 30 dB of AGC
range in RFA1, more than 100 dB of re ceiver dy namic range is
achieved.
The de ec or out put drives a gyrator fil er. The fil er pro vides a
three-pole, 0.05 de gree equiripple low-pass re sponse with ex cel ent
group de ay flat ness and min mal pulse ring ng. The 3 dB band width
of the fil er can be set from 4.5 kHz to 1.8 MHz with an ex er nal re
sis or.
The fil er is fol owed by a base-band am pli ier which boosts the de
tected sig nal to the BBOUT pin. When the re ceiver RF am pli i ers
are op er at ng at a 50%-50% duty cy cle, the BBOUT sig nal changes
about 10 mV/dB, with a peak-to-peak sig nal level of up to 685 mV.
For lower duty cy cles, the mV/dB slope and peak-to-peak sig nal
level are pro por ion ately less. The de ected sig nal is rid ng on a
1.1 Vdc level that var es some what with sup ply volt age, tem per a
ture, etc. BBOUT is cou pled to the CMPIN pin or to an ex er nal data
re cov ery pro cess (DSP, etc.) by a se ies ca pac or. The cor ect
value of the se ies ca pac or de pends on data rate, data run length,
and other fac ors as dis cussed in the
ASH Trans ceiver De signer’s
Guide.
When an ex er nal data re cov ery pro cess is used with AGC, BBOUT
must be cou pled to the ex er nal data re cov ery pro cess and CMPIN
by sep a ate se ies cou pling ca pac ors. The AGC re set func ion is
driven by the sig nal ap plied to CMPIN.
When the trans ceiver is placed in power-down (sleep) or in a trans
mit mode, the out put im ped ance of BBOUT be comes very high. This
fea ure helps pre serve the charge on the cou pling ca pac or to min
mize data slicer sta bi i za ion time when the trans ceiver switches
back to the re ceive mode.
Data Slicers
The CMPIN pin drives two data slic ers, which con vert the an a og
sig nal from BBOUT back into a digital stream. The best data slicer
choice de pends on the sys em op er at ng pa am e ers. Data slicer
DS1 is a ca pac ively-coupled com para or with pro vi sions for an ad
just able thresh old. DS1 pro vides the best per or mance at low
