ASH Transceiver Theory of Operation
In ro duc ion
RFM’s am pli ier-sequenced hy brid (ASH) trans ceiver is spe cif cally
de signed for short-range wire ess data com mu ni ca ion ap pli ca ions.
The trans ceiver pro vides ro bust op er a ion, very small size, low
power con sump ion and low im ple men a ion cost. All crit cal RF
func ions are con ained in the hy brid, sim pli y ng and speed ng de
sign-in. The ASH trans ceiver can be readily con ig ured to sup port a
wide range of data rates and pro o col re quire ments. The trans ceiver
fea ures ex cel ent sup pres sion of trans mit er har mon cs and vir u ally
no RF emis sions when re ceiv ng, mak ng it easy to cer ify to short-
range (unli censed) ra dio reg u a ions.
Am pli ier-Sequenced Re ceiver Op er a ion
The ASH trans ceiver’s unique fea ure set is made pos si ble by its
sys em ar chi ec ure. The heart of the trans ceiver is the am pli ier-
sequenced re ceiver sec ion, which pro vides more than 100 dB of
sta ble RF and de ec or gain with out any spe cial shield ng or de
coup ing pro vi sions. Sta bil ty is achieved by dis rib ut ng the to al RF
gain over
time
. This is in con rast to a super het ero dyne re ceiver,
which achieves sta bil ty by dis rib ut ng to al RF gain over mul i ple
fre quen cies.
Fig ure 1 shows the ba sic block di a gram and tim ng cy cle for an am
pli ier-sequenced re ceiver. Note that the bias to RF am pli i ers RFA1
and RFA2 are in de pend ently con rolled by a pulse gen er a or, and
that the two am pli i ers are cou pled by a sur ace acous ic wave
(SAW) de ay line, which has a typ cal de ay of 0.5 μs.
An in com ng RF sig nal is first fil ered by a nar ow-band SAW fil er,
and is then ap plied to RFA1. The pulse gen er a or turns RFA1 ON
for 0.5 μs. The am pli ied sig nal from RFA1 emerges from the SAW
de ay line at the in put to RFA2. RFA1 is now switched OFF and
RFA2 is switched ON for 0.55 μs, am pli y ng the RF sig nal fur her.
The ON time for RFA2 is usu ally set at 1.1 times the ON time for
RFA1, as the fil er ng ef ect of the SAW de ay line stretches the sig
nal pulse from RFA1 some what. As shown in the tim ng di a gram,
RFA1 and RFA2 are never on at the same time, as sur ng ex cel ent
re ceiver sta bil ty. Note that the nar ow-band SAW fil er elim nates
sam pling side band re sponses out side of the re ceiver passband, and
the SAW fil er and de ay line act to gether to pro vide very high re
ceiver ul i mate re ec ion.
Am pli ier-sequenced re ceiver op er a ion has sev eral in er est ng char
ac er s ics that can be ex ploited in sys em de sign. The RF am pli i ers
in an am pli ier-sequenced re ceiver can be turned on and off al most
in stantly, al ow ng for very quick power-down (sleep) and wake-up
times. Also, both RF am pli i ers can be off be ween ON se quences
to trade-off re ceiver noise fig ure for lower av er age cur ent con sump
tion. The ef ect on noise fig ure can be mod eled as if RFA1 is on
con in u ously, with an at enu ator placed in front of it with a loss
equiv a ent to 10*log

amplifier-sequenced re ceiver is in her ently a sam pling re ceiver, the
