Flexible Building Blocks
The QL80FC device is divided into two main portions
an embedded design and a customizable design.
The embedded portion contains the built-in
functionality of Fibre Channel's FC-1 and FC-2 layers,
which the system designer uses as if it were a standard
product. As an embedded device, all functionality and
timing requirements have been verified in hardware
and are guaranteed. The customizable portion consists
of programmable logic, which interfaces directly to the
embedded portion of the chip. These gates may be
programmed to implement a variety of functions such
as glue logic to other bus standards (PCI, SCSI) or
programming Fibre Channel upper layer protocols.
High Performance Solution
The QuickFC device provides a means to receive and
transmit high-speed serial data and implement a Fibre
Channel link interface, or any proprietary high-speed
serial link. The part was designed to handle the timing
critical portions of the serial link and is meant to be
used in conjunction with standard Gbps SERDES
transmitter/receiver chips. These chips, when combined
with internal FIFO buffer memory, can be used to build
a completely customizable serial link able to perform
at 2.5Gbps.
Reference Development Kit
The QuickFC family's RDK allows system engineers to
test their design in hardware while developing software
drivers, significantly reducing overall development time.
The development boards have been tested over optical
cables at up to 1K meters and can achieve data rates of
2.5 Gbps. The RDK implements a complete serial link
with a GBIC, SERDES, a 2 meter optical cable, memory
and a socketed QuickFC device, all plugging into a PCI
expansion slot using QuickLogic's QuickPCI device.
